Morning workshops

Kitchen Science

Learn some of the essential chemical reactions that take place in the kitchen and how they make our food more edible, nutritious and tasty! This workshop will focus on scratch cooking recipes (no processed stuff) using wholesome ingredients that you will get to sample a lot of and enjoy! One day you might see how yeast works, the next how to "bloom spices." Join us in the kitchen and develop skills you will use for a lifetime! Instructor: Jackie Davison, chef and owner of Potluck Kitchen Studio

Intro to Marine Biology

Want to know more about the amazing marine environment right on your doorstep?! Join Pacific Mammal Research for hands on marine biology activ- ities ranging from water quality testing and creating your own plankton, to learning how to photo-ID marine mammals. You will gain an in depth knowledge of the marine world, learning how algae, plants and animals interact to form an amazingly complex ecosystem, and how you can be a part of protecting it. Find out how fun marine biology can be! Instructors: Cindy Elliser and Katrina MacIver, Research Scientists at Pacific Mammal Research

Problem-Solving and Engineering Science

Scientists collect important information and engineers design solutions to solve problems. And when the two are put together? We can accomplish great feats of strength and speed! In this workshop, you will use the engineering process to create impressive solutions to challenges using ordinary materials and brain power. Each day will have a new challenge, allow for brainstorming, building and testing time, and then a competition to see who design can hold the most weight, fly the farthest, etc. Can you win the gold in the Engineering Olympics?

Afternoon workshops

Rocking Recreation

Get outside and get going! One day you may be hiking, geocaching or honing your Ultimate Frizbee skills. On another day you may be biking on Guemes. Activities are in the planning. If you want to enjoy what our area offers in summer recreation, this is the workshop for you. What we know for sure—you'll be challenged and outdoors. Campers need to have good walking shoes, bikes and helmets. Instructors: AHS Girls Swim Team

Art and Science

This summer, we will explore how chemicals can create amazing art pieces. We also plan to make our own "spinners". Come join us for a workshop that will test and stretch your creativity!Instructors: Maggie Santos and Michelle Romag, Anacortes Youth Arts Board, STEM Committee members, and parents

Battling Robot Fun!

Workshop to be held at AHS robotics lab. This hands-on, engaging class will be led by students and mentors from the Anacortes High School FIRST Robotics team. Students will build and program robots using Lego Mindstorm NXT/EV3 microcontrollers and the RobotC programming language. You will learn how to design and build functioning robots to compete in a challenging and fun-filled competition. Become a part of the 10% of the people in the world who have had the opportunity to build and control a machine from scratch. The future is now! Instructors: Anacortes High School Robotics Team Members and Mentors.
