The Pete Larkworthy Scholarship for a student planning a career in Mechanical Engineering is presented annually to a graduating senior or a former graduate of Anacortes High School. Pete passed away in December, 2011, but he helped to establish this scholarship before his passing and he would have been honored to know of your commitment to study mechanical engineering.  Pete was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1945, and graduated second in his mechanical engineering class at the University of Winnipeg. His career in mechanical engineering started in the 1960s when he joined the team tasked with developing the “new” Boeing 747—at that time the work was still done with slide rules and hands-on fabrication and blue and white collar employees worked side by side.  He commuted to work by bicycle most of the time, an early advocate of alternative transportation. Pete would have been especially pleased to know that the recipient of this scholarship eventually used his or her engineering skills toward lowering our world’s carbon footprint.

Outside of work, Pete  immersed himself in the recreation of the northwest, learning climbing skills to later scale Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker, Mt. St. Helens, and many lesser peaks. Skydiving, long distance bicycling including a year cycling Europe, diving, running, skiing, kayaking all were passions for Pete. Sailing, though, became his love, and he determined to build his own sailboat. His wife and partner of 33 years, Linda Zielinski, helped him create his beloved Marara—a very seaworthy 36-foot sailboat which was 8 years in the building and 19 years in the sailing, mostly as a live-aboard.

Pete’s love of the outdoors and zest for life never diminished as his determined struggles with Huntington’s Disease began in the late 1990s. Surrounded by the love and support of so many dear friends and his wife, Pete’s life stayed rich and full to the end. Linda honors his life and as he would have wanted, celebrates your accomplishments and your ability to see the beauty of our world in a way known only to the engineers amongst us, and congratulates you on your graduation and being selected for the Pete Larkworthy Mechanical Engineering Scholarship.
