ASF is excited to announce several NEW scholarships in 2021.
The Benjamin Guy Masters Memorial Scholarship, established by the Masters Family, honors the memory of their son and brother, Benjamin, who passed away of brain cancer at age 10. Ben had many talents and interests, but is remembered most for his focus on the feelings of others. He got along with everyone. He was an ardent reader, deep thinker and interested in pursuing knowledge. The recipient of this scholarship will be a student who has gone above and beyond normal expectations to care for others.
The Chuck and Kay Starkovich Education Scholarship and Chuck and Kay Starkovich Scholarship for vocational or CTE studies will be awarded this year. These two scholarships were established by Angela and Chad Currie, Tyler and Monique Starkovich and Tim and Tara Starkovich in honor of their parent’s 50th Wedding Anniversary and in honor of their dedication and devotion to teaching. Chuck and Kay were long time elementary educators in the Anacortes School District, with Chuck teaching most of his forty-two years at Fidalgo Elementary School and Kay teaching all of her twenty-five years at Mt. Erie Elementary School.
The Mark A. Edson Legacy Fund Trade School and Mark A. Edson Legacy Fund STEM Scholarships have been established through the Seattle Foundation and will be awarded to students pursuing technical and vocational pathways and STEM at a 4-year university.
The Gordon Bruchner Engineering Scholarship was established through the estate of Gordon William Bruchner who graduated from the Colorado School of Mines, served in the Army, and went on to work as an engineer, eventually becoming City Engineer for Anacortes. He loved hiking, camping and biking and was always active in his community. Mr. Bruchner passed away on June 13, 2019. Mr. Bruchner had the advantage of going to college, earning an engineering degree, and applying that education to a career in engineering. He would like to help provide that same opportunity to Anacortes students.
The Anacortes Schools Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that grants scholarships and awards to students and graduates of the Anacortes School District. The Foundation was formed in 1984 to promote student achievement. Scholarships are made possible by endowments and gifts made to the Foundation.
In 2020, ASF awarded $245,000 to over 100 students.
ASF is proud to partner with a number of individuals and organizations, and to provide scholarships for students pursuing 2-year and 4-year degrees and technical certifications.
Will you help ASF fill 2021 with hope for AHS Seniors and current college students?
It has been a challenging year for all Anacortes students. But, it has been especially difficult for the Anacortes High School Class of 2021 – attending all their classes online and missing out on many milestones of both their junior and senior years in high school. We also know that COVID 19 has made applying for college and learning about access to technical and vocational programs very difficult.
That is why the Anacortes Schools Foundation is especially dedicated to helping these students by providing scholarships for those wishing to continue their education through 4-year university, 2-year community college, technical and vocational programs.
Also, there are a few benefits to donors afforded by the 2020 and 2021 CARES Acts
- Taxpayers may deduct up to $300. This benefit includes any donations made (not including stocks) whether or not a household itemizes.
- Taxpayers may receive higher deductions for larger gifts. Under CARES, an individual can deduct up to 100% (previously 60%) of their adjusted gross income (AGI).
- Taxpayers aged 70 ½ or older may transfer funds directly from an individual retirement plan (IRA) to a qualified charity. Qualifying gifts count toward required minimum distributions, but are not included in taxable income (subject to limits). Donors may give as much as $100,000 directly from an IRA plan to a qualified charity.

Created from just one family's donation in 1984, ASF now manages more than $3 million in endowments and distributes more than $240,000 annually in scholarships.
Our mission is to empower all Anacortes students through scholarships and enriched learning opportunities.
The ASF believes passionately in the importance of community awareness and involvement in our schools.
