The Anacortes Schools Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, federal ID No. 91-1263495. This means that almost all donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
There are endless possibilities for donors to help our kids get the education, training and advanced learning skills necessary for them to succeed in today's world. ASF stands ready to help you explore the areas which interest you the most, and suggest the best ways your donation can make the biggest difference.
We support Early Childhood Learning with grants for preschool scholarships. For a single working parent who wants to take classes to increase her earning power, the cost of daycare can be prohibitive. The average cost of a year in daycare is $2,000, which stops many women from furthering their job skills. One donation here can change the life trajectory of an entire family forever.
Our STEM team (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is made up of dedicated volunteer parents who want to see equity in all our schools' enrichment grants. They are hard at work creating awareness of the shortfalls in our district's budget, and working with our administrators and teachers to create new and exciting ways to get our kids revved up about these critical subject areas. A donation designated for STEM goes straight to enrichment programs that will stimulate our students to consider their path in this high-tech age.
We support students attending Mountain School, a nationally recognized environmental education program offered by North Cascades Institute in cooperation with North Cascades National Park. Each fall, Anacortes 5th graders from Mt Erie, Island View and Fidalgo Elementary Schools attend a 3-day program with their school class, teacher and chaperones to learn about the ecosystems and natural and cultural history of the mountains.
General donations to ASF marked "Use wherever it is most useful" are critical to our continuing active support of scholarships and curriculum enrichment. We have only one fund at ASF available for withdrawals for expenses. Our all-volunteer board members do not draw stipends; they volunteer hundreds of hours annually for our schools and community. Donations marked "Use as Needed" would boost this fund, and would help pay for the programs we give our parents when they attend our Scholarships Awards night in May, or for copying expenses to review the applications we receive from our students, or for postage when we write to each and every donor to say "Thank you!"
Finally, we have the huge purpose with which we began: Scholarships. You may review the current list elsewhere on this web site, start your own in honor or memory of a beloved family member, friend or mentor, or simply donate any amount and mark it Local Scholarships. Many times each spring, when we are deciding as carefully as we can how to distribute the funds available, there are deserving students whose needs go unmet for lack of money. Your donations, alone or joined with others, could help to fill this gap. We would be pleased to discuss these needs and procedures with you at any time.
